Working Hands: The Labor of the California Dream

Explore the work and the workers that created the massive success of the California citrus industry! This interactive 1.5 mile hike explores California’s complicated relationship with immigration and agricultural labor. Includes a stop by the historic Western Engine, one of the only remaining engines used to pump millions of gallons of irrigation to the region’s citrus growers. Students will be able to identify the contributions of various immigrant labor populations to the California citrus industry, and understand the disparity of their experiences.

California Citrus: A Golden Legacy

During this 2 hour multisensory tour, participants will learn how California’s second gold rush (citrus) helped shape and develop California today, the various groups of people that played an important role in the industry through their labor and technological developments, and the role two small navel orange trees played in the birth of an industry in Riverside. Additionally, students will experience the broad diversity of citrus fruit through enjoying an on-site citrus tasting.
